About This Course

Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field that applies the knowledge of cell biology, chemistry, material sciences, and engineering. The course offers an introduction to each of the principles of tissue engineering – cells, matrix (biomaterial scaffold), active molecules, and environmental factors. Cells are the main building blocks of tissue. Students will discover different cell sources, including stem cells. In one of the modules, students will also learn some of the cell culture techniques. Besides that, we will look through the characteristics of different types of biomaterial scaffolds, material characterisation methods, as well as cell-material interaction. In addition to cells and biomaterials, students will be able to explore an ideal environment that supports cell regeneration. For this course, such an environment is divided into two modules; growth factors and bioreactors. In the end, students will have the chance to take a peek at some of the recent case studies.

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Illida Nawi

Illida has always been passionate about sharing her knowledge and mentoring students with their research projects. She obtained her degree in Biomedical Engineering (concentration in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering) from Case Western Reserve University, USA. After graduating, she pursued her studies in the design and validation of a novel-designed mechanical cell bioreactor and later earned MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Malaya, Malaysia. This is also where she acquired four years of teaching experience. Besides teaching, Illida also gained experience in designing laboratory modules and supervising and training undergraduate and postgraduate students in research technical skills. Later on, she moved to Manchester where she was awarded her Ph.D. from the University of Manchester for her research in regenerating cartilage in peptide hydrogels.
