About This Course

Tissue engineering is an interdisciplinary field that applies knowledge from cell biology, chemistry, materials science, and engineering. This course offers an introduction to the core principles of tissue engineering: cells, the matrix (biomaterial scaffolds), active molecules, and environmental factors. Cells are the fundamental building blocks of tissue. Students will explore various cell sources, including stem cells, and will learn basic cell culture techniques in one of the modules. The course will also cover the characteristics of different types of biomaterial scaffolds, material characterisation methods, and cell–material interactions. In addition to cells and biomaterials, students will examine the ideal environment for supporting cell regeneration. This aspect of the course is divided into two modules: growth factors and bioreactors. Finally, students will have the opportunity to explore recent case studies in the field.

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Illida Nawi

Illida has always been passionate about sharing her knowledge and mentoring students with their research projects. She obtained her degree in Biomedical Engineering (concentration in Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering) from Case Western Reserve University, USA. After graduating, she pursued her studies in the design and validation of a novel-designed mechanical cell bioreactor and later earned MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Malaya, Malaysia. This is also where she acquired four years of teaching experience. Besides teaching, Illida also gained experience in designing laboratory modules and supervising and training undergraduate and postgraduate students in research technical skills. Later on, she moved to Manchester where she was awarded her Ph.D. from the University of Manchester for her research in regenerating cartilage in peptide hydrogels.
