About This Course

Gain an introduction to a vast array of genetic topics: from the theoretical basis of the components and the structure of our genetic material to epigenetics and gene editing. The fundamentals of transcription and RNA processing will be covered, followed by protein synthesis and the chromosomal basis of inheritance. While this program focusses mostly on human genetics and how mutations and large-scale chromosomal changes can lead to pathophysiology in humans, students will also learn about the genetics of bacteria and viruses and explore the pressing problem of drug resistance in bacteria. In addition, students will gain knowledge on the evolution of genes and traits, which will include topics such as natural selection, the neutral theory or morphological evolution. Finally, this knowledge will be accompanied by the study of real-life molecular techniques used commonly in genetic labs, including the cloning of genes and the molecular analysis of DNA, RNA, proteins, genes, and chromosomes. To conclude, we will explore genetic engineering techniques developed in the last decades and the progress and potential of gene therapy.

Who Is This Course For

This course is for anyone interested in learning more about genetics, both to review the theory and the basics of fundamental concepts at the molecular level, and to get a more in-depth understanding of the current challenges, technological advances, and therapy development. The content of this certification encompasses a broad range of topics from biochemistry to medicine and genetic engineering, which will broaden the knowledge of anyone with a scientific background interested in expanding it. This program will provide a solid foundation to anyone seeking to further their education as well as an entry-level scientific or pharmaceutical job.

What you'll learn

  • From DNA to phenotype: learn about the nature and structure of the genetic material and how it encodes the information leading to traits
  • Gain an understanding of gene regulation in eukaryotes and prokaryotes and how it is influenced by the environment
  • Explore the concepts of inheritance and Mendel’s principles, and learn how to apply them to human diseases and traits
  • Understand how genetics and evolution are intertwined as well as the molecular basis and phenotypic consequences of genetic mutations
  • Gain familiarity with the techniques of molecular genetics used in labs and the advances in genetic engineering
