About This Course

Scientific writing is not just about writing science but entails complex technical writing that scientists use to communicate their research findings to others. Hence good practice in scientific writing is much needed to successfully disseminate scientific discoveries and research data. This introductory course is designed for entry-level learners from both academic and industry backgrounds. Using practical examples, this course will assist them to become efficient scientific writers. This course discusses various forms of scientific writing such as research proposals, reports and manuals, grant applications, theses, manuscripts, and conference posters and presentations. Additionally, the course also discusses referencing and various styles of referencing. With advancements in technology and easy access to a multitude of information sources, ethical issues and plagiarism are rising challenges. These issues are encountered in all forms of writing and communication, including scientific writing, thus undermining the integrity of education. This course highlights these issues, and also discussed how one can avoid them.

Basically, this course is for anyone working in the scientific field or planning to enter this field for a career or otherwise. Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Justine Braguy

PhD in Biotechnology and Plant Science with BSc in Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics and a Master’s in Biotechnology specialized in Synthetic Biology. Currently, I am investigating the role of strigolactones in plant development and as a host-recognition signal used by the parasitic plant Striga by studying CRISPR-mediated genome engineered rice.

Dr. Amrita Sarkar

Amrita Sarkar has a Ph.D. in Chemistry and postdoctoral research experience in chemical and cell biology. As a researcher, Amrita has worked on a label-free discovery array platform for proteomics powered by mass spectrometry. She has authored several scientific publications in leading peer-reviewed international journals. After postdoctoral research, Amrita has worked in a pharmaceutical MNC in the parenteral division developing complex injectable and ophthalmic formulations for diverse diseases. Being passionate about scientific communication with over 15 years of experience, Amrita has focussed on scientific writing and editing. Through her efforts, she aims to assist the scientific community to communicate scientific advances, research findings, and breakthroughs clearly and coherently to a wider public.
