Molecular Epidemiology of Infectious Diseases

Learn how molecular and epidemiological data are used together to understand infectious disease transmission and to help prevent and control pathogens.

Starts 29th May 2024

About This Course

Infectious diseases are a significant burden for human, animal, and plant populations worldwide. Many different organisms are responsible, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and worms. New pathogens are emerging, and old ones adapt to their environment and change constantly. The genetic variation mechanisms of pathogens play an important role in affecting not only how they interact with their hosts and the disease they cause, but also their evolution and spread over time and space. The latest advancements in pathogen molecular diagnostics, genotyping, and sequencing, coupled with the collection and analysis of complex epidemiological information, have become invaluable tools to better understand the transmission of infectious diseases. This increased understanding is crucial to predict, prevent and control the spread of infection in any population. Molecular epidemiology uses the molecular data coming from pathogens with the epidemiological information collected from the hosts to inform and solve public, animal, or plant health issues. Molecular and epidemiological data for example can be used together to track when and where a pathogen is spreading, to identify the source of microbiological contamination, and to inform the management of current and future disease outbreaks. This course covers the basics of the molecular epidemiological approach as applied to the field of infectious diseases.

Who Is This Course For

This introductory course is aimed at a wide range of graduates and professionals who will find it useful for their personal interests, research, professional needs, and future careers in either academia, industry, or the public sector. These include (but are not limited to) bioscience, biomedical or bio-veterinary graduates (Master’s level), industry and public health professionals, or simply research enthusiasts interested in learning the basics of the rationale, methodology, and scope of molecular epidemiology applied to pathogens and infectious diseases. A background in bioscience and a keen interest in infectious disease diagnostics, prevention, and control are important to fully understand and appreciate this course.

What you'll learn

  • What molecular epidemiology is and how it compares to “traditional” epidemiology
  • The rationale and approach of molecular epidemiology as applied to infectious diseases
  • The importance of pathogen genetic variation for infectious disease epidemiology
  • The major molecular typing tools used in molecular epidemiology
  • How to use and interpret molecular sequencing and phylogenetic data in an epidemiological context
  • The different epidemiological questions that can be addressed with molecular epidemiology
