Students will learn the basic tenants that make up all marine research including physical processes of the ocean, biological components of marine ecosystems, and the importance of chemistry in marine research. They will also gain an understanding of the effects of humans on the marine environment and how we might prevent further degradation of these ecosystems. Students will learn how we use marine resources in today’s world and the rise of marine biotechnology. Lastly, they will gain knowledge of the basic tools needed to succeed in a marine science career.

Who Is This Course For

This course is for anyone who wishes to further their marine science education. Although we start with the basics this quickly develops into a practical course focusing on subjects common to current marine science careers. Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Alison Monroe

Alison is a marine biologist with a Ph.D. in marine science from the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. She studies the effect of climate change on marine organisms, specifically those that live in threatened coral reef ecosystems. Her recent work uses molecular tools such as transcriptomics and proteomics to research how fish might acclimate to future climate scenarios. She spent much of the past 6 years exploring the beautiful and diverse coral reefs of Saudi Arabia and helped document one of the first mass coral bleaching events in the Red Sea.
