About This Course

This course will introduce you to what gene therapy is with its brief history. We will explore the basic concepts and principles all the way to a clear understanding of which diseases are good candidates for gene therapy. The different methods of modifying or silencing a gene will be explored using viral and non-viral vectors will be introduced as well as the current situation of modifying a germline with its technical and ethical challenges. We will also take a look into the present and future of gene therapy from a practical and legal point of view.

Veronica Hughes received her Ph.D. in medical science from the University of Florida. Her primary interest was cancer metastasis, dysregulation of the tumour microenvironment, and analysis of clinical trial design. Additionally, she engaged in the development of novel small animal models.
