About This Course

This course will give you a strong foundation of the basic principles of the immune system including what it is, and how it works. It will also explain why the study of the immune system is important for society and will cover the main immune cell types and explain the differences between the innate and adaptive immune systems. Students will learn about how the immune system fights infections and about chronic inflammation. They will learn about the role of the immune system in allergies, autoimmune disorders, and inherited immunodeficiency disorders. Finally, students will learn about how the immune system can be targeted therapeutically using immunotherapies.

This course is for anyone with a basic understanding of biology who is looking to get a strong base knowledge or is curious about how the immune system works, why it is important, and its role in diseases. It will be particularly useful for anyone studying or considering a career in immunology as this course gives a strong overview of the foundations of the immune system and how it can be harnessed therapeutically. Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Alice Hamilton

Dr. Alice Hamilton gained a 1st class BSc in Biomedical Sciences in 2015 from the University of Dundee. She then joined the William Harvey Institute Queen Mary University of London where in 2016 she gained a M.Res. in Inflammation: Cellular and Vascular Aspects and in 2020 she gained a Ph.D. in cardiovascular pathophysiology. Her doctoral thesis was titled ‘The Effect of Social Isolation on the Immune System’.
