About This Course

In this course, a comprehensive introduction to the chemical basis of drug discovery will be provided. This includes the properties of small molecules that act as drugs, their cellular targets, and what to consider when designing a drug. The course also addresses how the body responds to drugs and metabolizes them when they are administered and how this affects the drug discovery process. An overview of the drug discovery process will be explained from how to find prospective drug targets to the scientific hypothesis all the way to clinical trials and the market and what happens after. An insight into the laboratory-based techniques involved in drug discovery will also be given and how chemicals in the body serve as templates for new drugs. Finally, considerations of drug formulations will be presented in addition to vaccines, how they function, and considerations in their development.
