Principles of Biochemistry

This course introduces the principles of biochemistry starting from the biological building blocks of our cells to fundamental metabolic signalling cascades and how these can be utilised in cancer therapy.

Starts 13th August 2022

About This Course

This course offers a diverse introduction to biochemistry focusing on a range of themes including the basic structure of proteins, key enzymatic reactions to more complex signalling pathways which drive cell growth. Students will be able to gain a good understanding of key biochemical pathways such as glycolysis and the citric acid cycle. The two chief cell signalling cascades which are essential for cell growth will also be discussed in detail. Importantly, students will learn about perturbed cell metabolism in cancer cells and how this can be targeted in novel cancer therapy.

Who Is This Course For

This course is for anyone wanting to advance their knowledge on the principles of biochemistry whether to supplement with their university course or to help advance their career. By taking this course you will gain an insight of the underpinnings of our cells and how key biochemical reactions work together allowing our cells to provide energy allowing us to be alive. This course will highlight several key energy sources and how these are utilised in the cells as well as what happens when these mechanisms become dysregulated. This class certification will give an advantage to anyone seeking to land competitive entry-level Biochemistry jobs or looking to further their education in advanced degree biochemistry program.

What you'll learn

  • Understand the basics of protein structure and protein folding
  • Appreciate the many different sources of energy for cell metabolism
  • Be able to draw out enzymatic reactions
  • Gain an insight into key biochemical reactions in the cells
  • Become familiar with key cell signalling pathways
  • Understand the importance of cell biochemistry in cancer therapy

Meet Your Instructor

Dr. Mai Shafei

Mai holds a PhD in Cancer Metabolism from the University of the West of England, UK. Her PhD focused on dysregulated cell metabolism in particular the role branched-chain aminotransferase proteins in the progression of breast cancer. Her work has been published in peer-reviewed scientific journals including Oncotarget. After her PhD, she moved to Sheffield for a post-doctoral research position at the University of Sheffield investigating mechanisms by which epithelial tissues shape and polarize using the mammary gland as a model system. She has developed strong expertise in biochemistry, breast cancer, cell biology and cell signalling pathways.
