Drug Discovery

This course provides a comprehensive interdisciplinary introduction into the science and process of drug discovery. The course addresses chemical, biological and business aspects of drug discovery and how it works in the real world from basic laboratory investigation until it reaches the patient in the market.

Starts 12th August 2022

About This Course

In this course, a comprehensive introduction into the chemical basis of drug discovery will be provided. This includes properties of small molecules that act as drugs, their cellular targets and what to consider when designing a drug. The course also addresses how the body responds to drugs and metabolizes them when they are administered and how this affects the drug discovery process. An overview of the drug discovery process will be explained from how to find prospective drug targets to the scientific hypothesis all the way to clinical trials and the market and what happens after. An insight into the laboratory-based techniques involved in drug discovery will also be given and how chemicals in the body serve as templates for new drugs. Finally, considerations of drug formulations will be presented in addition to vaccines, how they function and considerations in their development.

Who Is This Course For

This course is for anyone with a background in the life sciences or chemistry who wants to understand how the process of drug discovery works. A real-world view into how a drug is developed from the very basic hypothesis and all the way into the market including the challenges academics and pharmaceutical companies face.

What you'll learn
