Cell Biology

This course will introduce you to the complex world of cells- the most basic unit of life. We will explore how they grow, move, respond to and interact with their environment.

Starts 13th August 2022

About This Course

The study of Cell Biology revolves around the structure and function of cells in both prokaryotic and eukaryotic domains. The course provides an insight into the cell structures, cellular metabolism, cell signalling, cell cycle, and other aspects of cellular biochemistry at the molecular level. Cells form the fundamental unit of life and understanding cellular functions and behaviour can help to understand complex multicellular organisms and biological systems. The concepts discussed in this course help to create a strong background for understanding advanced concepts in cancer biology, genetics, microbiology, molecular biology, immunogenomics, and others.

Who Is This Course For

This course is intended for the individual who seeks to broaden their knowledge and further their understanding of cell biology. An advanced undergraduate student focusing on the sciences would benefit from this course, as would a Masters-level student in their first year of studies in a biological science. As this course is self-paced, an individual who is not in a formal science program but wishes to learn more about this topic would also benefit from this course.

What you'll learn

  • Cell membranes – including the basic structure and function of cell membranes, as well as plasma membrane channels and transporter proteins
  • Organelles – including an overview of organelle structure and function, endocytosis and intracellular transport, and organelle biogenesis
  • Genetic of cell biology – including an overview of cell division, the mitochondrial genome, gene expression and post-transcriptional regulation, and cell cycle checkpoints
  • Cell dynamics – including cell motility, adhesion, and invasion, EMT/MET, and the relationship between dynamics and cell signalling
  • Cell communication – including the basics of signalling pathways and signal transduction, intercellular, intracellular, and extracellular signalling
  • Cell metabolism – including the basics of normal metabolism, and the metabolism of cells under stress as well as cancer cells
